Vital IG Cluster of Papua New Guinea

Fifteen languages will receive God’s Word in their own language!

Oh, what a wonderful God we have! How great are his riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and methods! (Romans 11:33, NLT)

The Vital IG Cluster of 15 language groups in Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, north of Australia. The area has long been the scene of sweeping evangelization efforts. Yet today, throughout the majority of communities, people remain enslaved by oppressive spiritual forces — forces that have held sway across generations.

For the people and culture to experience the powerful transformation of the Gospel, they need the Scripture in their mother tongue. Papua New Guinea is probably the most linguistically diverse nation on earth, boasting 830 languages. This project represents a strategy to accelerate Scripture translation for 15 languages, representing nearly 50,000 people. Project Goal: Old Testament selections and Acts, equal to 2,545 verses.

  • A workshop was held during the entire month of June. Six language groups (Iamelele, Iduna, Kaninuwa, Maiadomu, Tau¬pota and Wedau) were represented with 16 participants. The next course is set for October. Pray for the teams as they prepare for course and that they will get the most out of it.
  • Pray that the number of fluent mother-tongue readers will increase through literacy to maximize Scripture use.
