Tharaka of Kenya

112,000 speakers. This project is fully partnered!! God is clearly at work among the Tharaka people. Ever since the Tharaka first heard of Jesus in the 1930s, they’ve grown in their recognition of the importance of following Jesus. But the creation of written forms for the Tharaka language and the completion of the New Testament in 2001 were giant steps forward for the community. The Old Testament will provide context for the New Testament and will serve as an encouragement for these people who face similar problems of drought, famine and the harsh farming conditions.

  • Pray that the team’s labors on the important book of Exodus will be finished soon. The team drafted the prophetic books of Amos and Nahum. The translation of Genesis is ongoing. Praise God for the encouraging progress that the Tharaka translators are making.
  • Continue to pray for the health and safety of the team members and their families. Pray also for good group dynamics as the translators work together.
  • One hundred thirty participants attended a teacher-training event, which equipped them to use mother-tongue materials in grades one, two and three. Pray that local interest in mother-tongue literacy will continue to increase.
