Rigo Cluster of Papua New Guinea

The Rigo cluster represents four language groups: Sinaugoro, Taboro, Boku and Kalo. The villages lie along the southeastern coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG) near the capital city of Port Moresby. Christian missionaries found the Rigo area in the 1880s. Today more than 90% of the population consider themselves Christians. Although Christianity has been part of the local culture for more than 100 years, the church lacks the strong foundation of the Scriptures. Fear of spirits and witchcraft dominate the lives of many including followers of Jesus. Each language has two or more coordinators who will oversee the work. Thirty-seven translators want to be involved in the translation process. Area churches heartily endorse the project SIL will help with training through scheduled workshops. This will be the first Seed Company project administered by the Bible Translation Association (BTA) of PNG. It will provide a platform for more cooperation between BTA and The Seed Company in PNG where about 250 language groups still need Bible translation.

  • Pray for safety in team’s travel, health in the midst of stress, adequate rest and alertness to learn quickly. Continue to pray for the two new Taboro translator-trainees. Ask God to help them understand quickly and give them excitement and fulfillment in their new roles.

  • Pray for safety for Kidu and the translators as they travel to and from workshops and for Kidu’s follow-up visits with the translators in their villages.

  • Pray for a quick resolution of the Bible Society’s questions about Scripture adaptation and for the highest possible quality in the translated end products.
