Pura of Timor

11,000 speakers. Most Pura people are fishermen and gardeners, growing or catching enough on their island to provide for their families. Missionaries brought Christianity to the Pura people decades ago, establishing both Protestant and Catholic traditions in the area. Approximately 80% of all Pura attend church and consider themselves Christians. However, because they have never had Scripture in their language, they do not readily connect faith with their daily problems.

  • A team of mother-tongue translators has been working with a Wycliffe adviser couple to translate the very first portion of Scripture into their own language.
  • Praise God for the enthusiasm of the translation team and for the completion of this first Scripture in the Pura language.
  • The book of Mark in the Pura language was dedicated on Alor Island at the General Assembly meeting of the largest Protestant denomination in the region, a gathering held every four years. Thank the Lord for the opportunity to dedicate Mark’s Gospel at this well-attended event, so many more people now know of the translation work going on in Pura.
