Pidgin of Nigeria
Over 1 million speakers. Nigeria has a greater wealth of cultural and linguistic diversity than most countries its size. When people who speak different languages come together, they often speak Nigerian Pidgin, a meshing of vocabulary from English—and a smattering of other major languages—with a grammar that is heavily influenced by the structure of Nigerian language families. It has become a well developed language in its own right. In some urban areas where many groups meet, it is becoming the main language for people. In places where there are congregations of mixed ethnic groups, pastors and evangelists use Pidgin because everyone in their congregations, no matter their origin, can understand it on some level. In many cases, these groups also lack the Scriptures. This has made room for many false teachers who run largely unchallenged as few can study the Scriptures.
- Pray for the translators who want to provide the complete New Testament and Psalms for pastors to use with their congregations. And they want to make available recordings of these portions to distribute more widely.
- The New Testament and Psalms are already completed in rough draft, but must be checked by each team member, field tested, consultant checked, and recorded. Pray for good final production.
- Pray for safety and good results as the translation teams travel to many parts to test the translation and acquaint many churches of the coming recordings and Scripture in Pidgin. Pray for heightened interest wherever they go.
