Paranan of Philippines
15,000 Paranan people live in Palanan, a remote coastal region of Luzon Island in the northern Philippines. Two efforts by Philippine cross-cultural workers in the 1980s and 1990s produced 43 percent of the New Testament in Paranan, but work stopped when they left. Today, as a result of the previous Scripture translation, Paranan pastors lead five churches, and other churches have been planted. Traditional religion, which depends on the use of magic and spirit placation, still dominates the lives of most Paranan. Many who openly profess Christianity still rely on some aspects of their traditional religious system. The church believes having God’s Word in their own language will solve such problems.
- A seminar for Pastors featured Wayne Dye’s book “How to Interpret Scripture Cross Culturally”. Pray that Paranan church leaders will utilize the helpful tools they were given at this seminar to preach and teach with power from the mother-tongue Scriptures.
- Cost of the coming NTs is too high for many of the Paranan. The church is trying to subsidize the NT’s by selling pigs. Pray for the success of the fundraising pig project so that all who desire a NT will be able to get one.
- The team planned to submit the edited copy of this test edition for printing by the end of March. Pray that many local people will read this test edition of the New Testament with spiritual profit. Pray that as they read it they’ll offer comments and suggestions for improving the translation before the final printing.
