North Malaita of Solomon Islands
The Baegu and Baelelea people of the Solomon Islands live on the northern end of Malaita Island. Since a political coup in 2000, families struggle to find enough cash for basic supplies. The first Christian missionaries arrived in the early 1900s. Today, most people consider themselves Christians. Fear of spirits, witchcraft and cults is prevalent in the area. One group teaches circumcision and keeping other Jewish rituals as the way to please God. They also believe they are Jews descended from Abraham.
Several local denominations are endorsing the project. In addition to The Seed Company, SIL and Pioneer Bible Translators will cooperate to provide training in workshop settings, consultant help and administrative services.
-
Praise God that work on the Gospel of Luke in the two languages is moving steadily forward. Pray that the Lord will empower Erastus, a speaker of Baegu, and Aloysius, a speaker of Baelelea, in their task so that the translation will be in people’s hands soon.
-
Pray that Aloysius can learn how to prevent computer viruses from invading his hard drive and slowing the translation work. Pray for encouragement.
-
Pray that key doctrinal terms in the Scriptures, so critical to conveying the essential biblical message, will be translated accurately and dynamically in the North Malaita Cluster languages.
