Noon of Senegal

On the westernmost tip of Africa lies Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Not far from Dakar is the town of Thiès and the surrounding villages where 25,000 people of the Noon (pronounced “known”) language group live. The Noon are predominantly Catholic, unlike 95 percent of the people of Senegal who practice another major world religion. In 2002 only five Noons were identified as evangelical Christians; the remainder blended traditional animistic beliefs with their other beliefs.

In 1996 The Seed Company, along with other partners, agreed to sponsor the Noon project, with the intention of seeing nationals eventually take it over. The translation is well underway and they plan to finish the entire New Testament by the year 2009.

  • Praise God that the team has drafted the theologically rich epistle of 1 Corinthians and that it has been checked by a consultant. Pray that the Lord will give the team extraordinary grace to draft 2 Corinthians, a task that’s putting their translation abilities to the test.

  • Pray that the fruit of the team’s painstaking labors—the mother-tongue NT—will be welcomed and put to good use by Noon speakers.

  • Continue to pray that the Lord will put His safeguard around the team members and their loved ones at this vital time in the translation program—especially team leader, his wife, the translator and pre-school teacher who were all sick.
