Noon of Senegal
On the westernmost tip of Africa lies Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Not far from Dakar is the town of Thiès and the surrounding villages where 25,000 people of the Noon (pronounced known) language group live. The Noon are predominantly Catholic, unlike 95 percent of the people of Senegal who practice another major world religion. In 2002 only five Noons were identified as evangelical Christians; the remainder blended traditional animistic beliefs with their other beliefs. In 1996 The Seed Company, along with other partners, agreed to sponsor the Noon project, with the intention of seeing nationals eventually take it over. The translation is well underway and the national translators plan to finish the entire New Testament by the year 2009.
- Pray that God will give special grace to the Noon team as they draft the lengthy and difficult epistle of 1 Corinthians.
- Pray that the Lord’s hand of protection will be upon the team and their families and pray for the team as they pursue preschool literacy, a potentially valuable aspect of Noon language development and use.
- Pray that the Senegal Bible Society and Noon team can work well together to achieve this crowning event—the publication of the Noon New Testament.
- Pray for the leadership during this critical time in the translation project. Pray that God will protect the team leader’s health and give him stamina.
