Nigerian Pidgin

Nigeria has a greater wealth of cultural and linguistic diversity than most countries its size. When people who speak different languages come together, they often speak Nigerian Pidgin, a meshing of vocabulary from English - and a smattering of other major languages - with a grammar that is heavily influenced by the structure of Nigerian language families. The project goals are the New Testament and Psalms in audio format, with print-outs for pastors. Three Nigerian translators have already been working on this project. All three are well-educated: two have degrees in English and one in engineering. One is a pastor who has been preaching in Pidgin for many years. Each of them grew up speaking Pidgin. Broad distribution of the Pidgin Scriptures to the community will be accomplished through a variety of audio formats. Churches and interested individuals will provide listening facilities for people who cannot afford this equipment.

  • Pray that the team will effectively apply the training they received
    to improve their work. Pray that they’ll achieve accuracy, clarity and
    naturalness in the translation.

  • Pray that mother-tongue speakers will gain a clear portrait of Jesus and God in Hebrews and Psalms.

  • Pray for the team as they deal with many Jewish idioms and cultural items in these two books. Pray that they can find ways to capture the beauty of the poetry in the Psalms and express this clearly in the Nigerian Pidgin language.
