Strategic Opportunities

Namma of South Asia

50,000 speakers who live in isolated and densely forested mountains, divided by deep valleys. The Namma culture has historically been resistant to missionary activity. Although Christianity came to the region about 200 years ago, its influence among the Namma people remains negligible. They have a highly negative attitude towards Christianity as an outside religion. The four known Christians came to faith through evangelism in one village. Because religion and culture are closely linked, three of the believers now reside outside their village and culture. The Namma practice a traditional animist religion, attributing power to the spirits of ancestors, trees and other objects that they believe control their lives. Without knowledge of God, Namma lives are ruled by fear, superstition and the practice of witchcraft by traditional village healers. God has called a dedicated and well-qualified couple as the translators. They come from a different language and culture within the same country. They plan to translate the NT and portions of the OT.

  • Pray that the Namma dictionary will be a useful literacy tool and provide an incentive for people to want to read God’s translated Word.
  • Mother-tongue education is needed. Pray that God will guide and help the translator as he seeks to work in partnership with two local organizations to establish a Namma multilingual education program.
  • The book of Mark is translated. Pray that this first book of Namma Scripture will be approved for publication.
  • Pray for a young new Namma believer who wants to help with the translation. He lived with the translators for three years and taught them the language. Through them he found the Lord. PTL
