Mbula of Nigeria
100,000 speakers - Project Goal: Complete NT and OT portions. About 50% of the Mbula people claim faith in Christ. However, Hausa, the trade language, is used for church. The majority of the Christians do not know that language well, so they are losing interest. As a result, a traditional cult is making a comeback in the area.
- Since secularism has removed the social taboos about premarital sex, young girls are contracting AIDs at an alarming rate. Pray that Bible translation in Mbula will provide a biblical worldview to replace the subjectivism regarding sexual behavior.
- Believers are losing interest because church is not relevant in a second language and reverting to a local cult. Pray that they will be stimulated when the Scriptures in Mbula are used in the churches and return to the Lord fully.
- Mbula people are committed to the development of their language. Two individuals were trained in a primer construction workshop in 2007 and have already drafted a transition primer. Pray for effective literacy gains as they plan other materials as well.
