Maya of Nigeria

About 90% of all Maya speakers are affiliated with Christianity. Maya speakers are mostly farmers in northern Nigeria plagued by poverty. Historically, they have been intimidated by other local cultures and have a low esteem of their own culture and language. What a lift it will be for them to have the Scripture in their own language!

Two mother-tongue speakers who have some linguistic background and are seminary graduates, will be full time translators. Five other will work part time in the project and are receiving specialized training on computer program use.

  • Praise God that the team has gotten off to a good start in translating His Word for the Maya people. Pray that in their early efforts they’ll find good patterns of work and find ways to serve effectively together.

  • Pray that these faithful laborers will experience the Lord’s abiding presence as they undertake the humanly impossible task He has entrusted to them.

  • A local translation committee has been appointed to oversee various aspects of the project. This gives the Maya community an opportunity to have some sense of ownership of the translation and to be involved in its progress and achievements. Pray that this committee will understand their role well.
