Majang of Ethiopia

The Majang live in southwestern Ethiopia. Although they were once semi-nomadic, Majang villages today support a more sedentary lifestyle. During the early 1960s, an American missionary couple brought the gospel to the Majang people. Today, about 85% of the language group claims affiliation with Christian churches. Two different SIL teams have worked in the project: the first during the 1990s and the second since 2002. Majang church leaders recommended translator Yosef Kalakun, who has already been working in the project for four years. In spite of having little opportunity for formal education in his youth, Yosef has proven a gifted translator. The team will complete the New Testament and portions of Genesis that will give the Majang people a foundation to understand the New Testament. The four Gospels are already complete; the team will consider printing those soon.

  • Pray for readers to be available to give community checks on acceptability of the translation.

  • Pray for sufficient trained consultants so it will not be delayed waiting for final approval.

  • Please pray for local enthusiasm for the completion and publication of the Gospels that will urge translators on.
