Legbo of Nigeria
Most of the Legbo people are farmers or fishermen in southeastern Nigeria. Their culture is rapidly changing. Sexual taboos and other social mores are breaking down, leading to an alarming rise in AIDS cases. Missionaries from the Efik people in the South brought the gospel upriver to the Legbo people about a hundred years ago. As a result, 80% of the Legbo people claim affiliation with Christianity. In practice, most people accept a veneer of Christianity, but are still bound by fear of spirits and also practice traditional religion. Because there are many Legbo people, especially older people, who cannot read, literacy and language development will be part of the strategic plan. The Legbo people are committed to the development of their language.
