Legbo of Nigeria
80,000 speakers - Most Legbo people are subsistence farmers or fishermen in northeastern Nigeria. Even though 80% of Legbo people claim to follow Christ, the faith of many reflects both the superstitions of animism and a veneer of Christianity. This syncretism burdens area pastors. They realize people don’t understand the Hausa Bible they must use in church. The pastors are anxious to have Scripture in the mother tongue which would help people understand holiness and faithfulness in a rapidly changing culture.
When the believers heard that two neighboring communities had completed the New Testament in their languages, they were anxious to see Scripture in their mother tongue as well. They were so desperate that when they heard a consultant was working with a group across the river, they sent a delegation to the place to request help for their own Bible translation program.
