Kenyan Sign Language IG of Kenya

Praise God for the impact that “How To Know God” is having on Deaf people.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. (Psalm 100:4-5, NLT)

More than 200,000 people who were either born deaf or became deaf when young, are cut off from God’s Word and need a Bible that uses their grammar and vocabulary. Deaf Kenyans have almost no access to the kinds of educational resources that would teach them skills such as reading or history.

The Kenyan Sign Language team will translate three sets of Scriptures in a DVD story format that presents truth to the Deaf Kenyan community in a form they can readily understand. Deaf Opportunity OutReach (D.O.O.R.) has a longstanding ministry to the Deaf of Kenya and other countries around the world. The Seed Company is partnering with DOOR to publish 110 stories as a “primary Bible” in DVD format for the Deaf community. These stories will quickly provide the local church with the tools it needs to share the Gospel and build disciples in the community. Wycliffe Africa is overseeing the construction of DOOR’s new international training and translation center, which will include video studios, editing rooms and dormitory space.

  • Before Kennedy joined Deaf Opportunity OutReach (DOOR), he would read the Bible in English at Deaf worship meet¬ings and then try to explain the passage in sign language; it was inadequate. When he received training in chronological Bible storytelling using sign language and went back to his town, they comprehended well and were all very interested. Later, he returned to DOOR to learn Bible translation and worked on the 32 stories in the Evangelism Series called “How To Know God,” which were made into a DVD. Before having this tool, the Deaf were still without God’s Word. But now sign-language Bible translation is helping them understand. And when they learn, their lives are changed. Praise God for the impact!
  • Thank the Lord for the completion of the Discipleship Series, “How To Follow God.” Pray for wisdom for the team as they tackle the next set of Bible stories. Pray for two new DOOR consultants-in-training who’ll need to learn sign language, study Deaf culture and be taught how to check sign-language Bible translations.
  • One DOOR translator visits schools for Deaf children. These Deaf had never before seen Scrip-ture in sign language. When they watched the DVD of the Evangelism Series, many wanted to learn about different stories in the Bible and found it exciting to know stories about the lives of David, Moses and other people in the Scriptures. Pray that many Deaf children will come to faith in Jesus through watching the DVD of sign-language Bible stories.
