Irigwe of Nigeria

This New Testament translation will speak especially to the women and poor of the Irigwe community. The Irigwe people have a thirst for the Bible in their language. Two previous translation efforts brought small amounts of Scripture to the Irigwe people, but few truly benefited from these efforts. Seed Company partners will bolster these earlier efforts by the Irigwe church, providing computers, training materials, visits by experienced consultants and training sessions.

The Irigwe people live in the Bassa regions of Nigeria’s Plateau State. God is clearly at work in Nigeria. About 50 million or 40% of the population profess to follow Jesus Christ. About 50% of Irigwe speakers are Christians. Another 20% are still following their traditional religion, while others are followers of another major religion. The strongest denomination in the area is Evangelical Church of West Africa. Praise God the project is fully funded.

  • The Gospel of Luke has been published and dedicated. At the dedication celebration one of the traditional rulers, though a follower of another major religion, challenged everyone present to use the translation. Praise God that Luke has been published and dedicated in Irigwe.

  • The Irigwe translators finished reviewing the Gospel of John individually and also together as a team, which included doing an accuracy check and determining clarity. Pray that the powerful witness to Christ in John’s Gospel will impact many people.

  • Thank the Lord for the good progress being made on the Irigwe New Testament. Pray that the team will remain strong and physically well to keep on task. Pray that they’ll not get discouraged.
