Guera Storying Cluster of Chad

God is drawing people through Bible stories as listeners in Chad respond with enthusiasm!

Those who fight against the LORD will be broken. He thunders against them from heaven: the LORD judges throughout the earth. He gives mighty strength to his king; he increases the might of his anointed one. (1 Samuel 2:10, NLT)

Speakers of 11 languages, the Guera people groups of Chad once lived in the mountains. Now their small villages are clustered in a semiarid region, about a day’s drive from the capital city N’Djamena. In three of these people groups, a significant number have attended school. And since all of them use stories to teach cultural values and history, this project rides on a sound cultural infrastructure. It’s exciting to learn that more mother-tongue evangelists are learning to tell Bible stories.
Christian missionaries and emissaries of another major religion came to this area in the 1950s. The other religion attracts Christian youth, because of greater educational and economic opportunities. And sadly, many nominally Christian families welcome wealthy husbands for their daughters from the other faith. African traditional religion also runs deep in this culture. Their project goal is 12 Scripture stories into 11 languages and the training of national evangelists in the use of these stories.

  • Yusuf was surprised at the peoples’ excitement. He’d just told a Bible story in his village, and people responded with enthusiasm, asking for more stories. This was quite fun! So Yusuf told another, to the delight of those gathered to listen. Ask the Holy Spirit to draw him and his listeners to salvation in Christ.
  • “Sometimes the details of preparing oral Bible stories that are accurate and natural seem tedious,” a team member reflected. “It can be difficult to see God in all the steps of drafting, testing and revising the stories. However, these past few months, we’ve seen God at work as stories are tested in the villages.” Thank the Lord for the team’s encouragement and growing excitement as they see their listeners’ response to the oral Bible stories.
  • The sound of 30 people working on Bible stories in 11 languages made a joyful noise at the April storying workshop. “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all you lands.” Pray for the teams as they test and revise their stories. Pray for motivation and the opportunity to finish the work, despite their need to work in their fields this rainy season.
