Guera of Africa

The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. (Isaiah 55:10-12, NLT)

The Guera people groups of Chad once lived in the mountains. Now their small villages are clustered in a semi-arid region, about a day’s drive from the capital city N’Djamena. In three of these people groups, a significant number have attended school. And since all of them use stories to teach cultural values and history, this project rides on a sound cultural infrastructure. It’s exciting to learn that more mother-tongue evangelists are learning to tell Bible stories. Christian missionaries and emissaries of another major religion came to this area in the 1950s. The other religion attracts Christian youth, because of greater educational and economic opportunities. And sadly, many nominally Christian families welcome wealthy husbands for their daughters from the other faith. African traditional religion also runs deep in this culture. Their project goal is 12 Scripture stories into 11 languages and the training of national evangelists in the use of these stories.

  • Thirty participants attended workshops last spring; 21 stories are now drafted in each of the 10 languages and being told in the villages. Pray that the team will finalize them, making any changes and corrections necessary before they record them. As hundreds of Guera people hear the Bible stories, pray that the Holy Spirit will open their eyes to their need for Jesus.

  • Seide, one of two women participants in the workshops, tells the Jesus stories to other women in Migaama. Surprisingly, their husbands don’t seem to mind that she’s doing this, even though they’re devout followers of the local religion. Praise God for this natural way of sharing His Word.

  • When women hear the stories, they usually tell them to their children and other women. This is a wonderful way for the Bible stories to spread informally through the village. Pray that God will open the minds and hearts of the people of Chad to God’s love and salvation.
