Erei speakers of Nigeria

Pray that eager candidates will take up the call to be trained as translators !

The Erei people live in a remote area of Nigeria. Development of their community has lagged behind other regions. Traditional values which used to maintain social stability are fast eroding as youth embrace new ideas, rejecting the authority of traditional leaders. Social injustice prevails; widows, in particular, are subject to exploitation.

This project will provide Old Testament portions, including parts of Genesis, Exodus, the Minor Prophets and selected Psalms. Translators will also work through New Testament portions including Luke, John, the pastoral Epistles and the letters of John.

Although missionaries brought the Gospel to the Erei people more than 60 years ago, only about 10 percent of the population follow Christ, spread among four denominations. Friday Inya is a mother tongue translator of Erei. He holds a bachelor of divinity degree and has taken linguistics training in Dallas, Texas. In the process of building a translation team, Friday will begin working on portions of the Old and New Testaments. The churches are poised to use and distribute the materials as they become available.

  • Ask the Lord to replenish project coordinator Friday’s sense of assurance and joy as he labors to bring God’s Word to Erei speakers and prepares to train a new team of translators. Pray that God will provide eager candidates who are willing to take up the call of bringing His Word to their people despite the enormous effort required.
  • Pray that Erei people will embrace the trial editions of Luke, James, Haggai and the “Wonderful Plan of God” booklet. Pray these will lead to life change.
  • Pray that God will kindle interest in the Erei “JESUS” film, which is based on Luke.
  • Pray that many Erei people will turn from idol worship and seek the one true God.
