Daily Prayer: the Rikou people of Timor

European traders introduced the people of this island to Christianity in the 1700s, but the Rikou people still do not have God’s Word in their own language. Recognizing this great need, the community formed a team and initiated Scripture translation in their own language. Their first effort was the Gospel of Mark, which they published after a thorough checking process. This first book of Scripture in the Rikou language was dedicated in a community celebration in December of 2004.

The team is now moving ahead with a full translation project alongside Seed Company partners.

  • The translation team learned so much since they did their first translation work (the Gospel of Mark),they also reworked parts of Mark, applying the skills they’ve developed since this first book.
  • The team has planned the community comprehension testing of Genesis. They’ll then make any necessary revisions and prepare for a consultant check.  Pray that the team will find fluent readers and good listeners for the comprehension testing as well as people who are willing to make suggestions.
  • This is the wave season in the region, so travel by ferry is more hazardous than at other times of the year. Pray for journey mercies as team members and participants travel by ferry to participate in the consultant check.
