Daily Prayer: the Avatime-speaking people of Ghana
24,000 primarily subsistence farmers living in traditional settlements scattered in the mountainous southeastern region of Ghana also known as the southern Volta region. People here were introduced to Christianity about 100 years ago, and churches were established. But traditional religion, with spirit possession, is widely practiced alongside Christianity, and believers often mix the religious practices together.
One translator was trained and worked with a Wycliffe team in a cluster of languages in northern Ghana that included his own mother tongue, a language that is related to Avatime. Access to Scripture in his own language has motivated him to reach out to other language groups in Ghana that are still waiting for translation. Though new, the Avatime project is fully partnered.
- Pray for the team as they learn translation principles and draw closer to the stage when they’ll begin translating God’s Word in the mother tongue.
- Pray for the team as they strategize planning and review, and set up results-based management and local church mobilization. He presented the need for language project reports. Pray for God’s wisdom and discernment.
- Pray that the Avatime team can inaugurate councils of churches in the eight local communities to oversee and mobilize people for language and translation activities.
