Daily Prayer: the Hawu-speaking people of Timor

110,000 speakers are Christians and animists who live in a politically and religiously turbulent area. The Timor region has been troubled by political and religious unrest for the last several years. Most of the Hawu speakers who live off the home island are active Christians. However, some who live in the homeland continue to follow the traditional religion and are considered resistant to the gospel. This project began as a one-year project to translate the Gospel of Mark and train local translators, and has now developed into a fully formed project to complete the New Testament and portions of the Old Testament. Project is fully funded, PTL.

  • A newly appointed member of the translation team, had been able to draft 14 chapters of Genesis using the OurWord software developed by The Seed Company. Praise God for the way Erlin has jumped into translation by drafting so much of Genesis on her own.
  • Pray as church leaders seek to schedule a time to work together with the translator and project coordinator to conduct an exegetical check of the translated portion of Genesis and to give additional translation training.
  • Because of community interest, church leaders and pastors have asked that the Gospel of Mark be recorded so portions can be played regularly on the Sabu radio station. The team would also like to publish some Sabu children’s Sunday school material based on passages from Mark. Pray for creativity and interested people to be involved in accomplishing these goals of producing and distributing Sunday school material.
