Daily Prayer: the Guinea Bissau LP Cluster

851,120 speakers - 10 languages - A targeted Initial Goal project to help the church in Guinea-Bissau begin translation work in all the languages in their country that still need Scripture. Languages participating in this cluster: Jola-Felupe, Mansoanka, Jola-Bayote & Balanta-Naga. God has given the small indigenous church of Guinea-Bissau the vision to reach their country for Christ. As the church struggled in recent years to present the gospel in meaningful ways, they realized their most serious challenge to evangelism was the lack of Scripture and evangelism tools in the 18 local languages of their country. Another major religion’s push to recruit converts made the situation even more acute. Sensing urgency, church leaders from various denominations decided to work together on a plan to make the gospel accessible to everyone. $53,043 needed

  • Translators also saw evidence of last year’s armed conflict with rebel forces in northern Guinea Bissau, in which many people lost their goods (including some of the translators). They saw evidence of loss of lives as well (a van which had been mined, for example) and other areas where bombs exploded. Pray for protection.
  • Praise God for the high degree of dedication of the Guinea Bissau translators, evident in their commitment to the translation task against difficult odds.
  • The Group B teams are mostly in the latter stages of their goal of completing the translation of Luke’s Gospel. It’s projected that they’ll finish up at the fifth workshop, scheduled for this month. Pray for perseverance.
  • Jola Felupe is further down the scale from the other three Group B teams. Their translation is going more slowly, but the translation is more dynamic in places than those of the other three teams and very clear and natural. Pray that they can achieve their translation objectives.
