Choco Cluster of Columbia
The rain and the snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. (Isaiah 55:10-1, NLT)
The 56,000 speakers of the southern Chocóan language groups live primarily on the Pacific coast of South America. Rugged terrain and extensive river systems contribute to the relative isolation of these ethnic groups. Many people are enticed or pressured into illicit drug production in areas where mosquitoes carry malaria and dengue fever. The Chocó believe evil spirits have power; the dead often become demonic beings; and shamans are spirit intermediaries. The Catholic Church has had a small impact, but few believers are found. Because the Chocó people live in an oral culture, this project will begin by helping partner groups produce accurate, oral retellings of Scripture stories. The second phase of work will build on this foundation and provide the community with the translated text of key Scriptures.
