Prayer Focus Stories

Bakossi of Cameroon

Bakossi speakers known for their unusual, bright red tea, the Bakossi people live on the slopes of Mt. Kupe and Mt. Manen-guba in southwestern Cameroon. A majority of the Bakossi claim to be Christians, but most are very nominal in their faith. They often miss spiritual truths because church services are conducted in English, which they do not understand very well. Until recently, local Presbyterian Church leaders opposed translation into the Bakossi language. Now they realize that the churches will never flourish without the New Testament in the language people can understand. Presbyterian leaders have joined the Catholic leadership in support of Bible translation.

  • Pray that the team can visit Bakossi communities where they were hindered from testing the translation due to heavy rains. Pray for travel safety and good health.

  • Praise God that this visit by the board members of the national Bible translation association buoyed everyone’s spirits. Pray that their enthusiasm spills over into the translation work and that they won’t grow weary.

  • Praise God for the good collaboration between Bakossi literacy workers and the government. Pray that the workshops in the French-speaking area will be a success.
