Aramaic M-South speakers of East Mediterranean

They’re hungry for God and they’re begging for the Old Testament.

God blesses those who are merciful , for they will be shown mercy. (Matthew 5;7, NLT)

The East Mediterranean Aramaic M-South people of centuries past were blessed to own an early translation of the Bible — more than 1,500 years ago. Yet in the long passage of time, their language has changed drastically, and that translation no longer speaks to people’s hearts. Their recently translated New Testament in their mother tongue has whet their appetite for more of God’s Word. Now they are begging for the Old Testament.

The project goal is for the Old Testament and audio recordings. A faithful remnant of about 35 percent of the Aramaic M-South speakers claim to be Christian, and the remaining 65 percent practice another major religion, which has gained numbers in the last 150 years.

Christians face severe persecution. One local translator and two translation consultants know the language well and will translate the Old Testament, starting in 2010 and ending in 2017.

  • The first draft of the book of Psalms is now complete. Pray that as the Psalms are translated they will encourage the translators. Pray that their discouragement will turn to praise.
  • Pray for a smooth transition to a new project manager and pray for team members who are separated by thousands of miles and many time zones. The team is still searching for an additional translator. Continue to pray the Lord will bring them the right person.
  • Please pray for the country, which has lots of demonstrations and government crackdowns. The Enemy wants nothing more than to thwart this eternally valuable work.
