Alago of Nigeria
An interdenominational committee representing all of the area churches requested help with translating Scripture. About thirty years ago, an expatriate couple started Bible translation work among the Alago. At that time, however, people were not interested in their mother tongue.
Today, however, the Alago are committed to the development of their language, including the compilation of a dictionary and the preparation of materials for literacy. About 35 percent of the population professes faith in Christ. Some of those would like to reach out to their friends and neighbors who are bound with the legalism of another area religion or trapped in fear by traditional animism.
Over the next six years, the team plans to translate the New Testament and Old Testament portions. They also anticipate producing the JESUS film.
Pray with Us:
-
Thank God for the local church’s heart to lovingly share their faith with their neighbors. This is often a very challenging process for believers in Nigeria.
-
Pray for perseverence for the local church as they begin this six-year process. It requires a great deal of hard work and personal sacrifice to travel to various workshop, testing sessions and learning times in addition to the hard work of translation. Often teams use bicycles to travel long distances.
-
Pray for the peace of Nigeria. Pray specifically that those who call themselves Christians in the country will avoid violence and love their neighbors even in the midst of suffering.
