Ache of Paraguay

The Ache speakers live on the edge of humid forests in SE Paraguay in small wooden houses in 6 different communities. Most of the people are hunter-gatherers, though some keep gardens or obtain jobs by harvesting nearby fields or selling handicrafts. The Ache began converting to Christianity after leaving the jungle to live near Spanish-speaking Paraguayans. Missionaries started working among them, and currently 10 to 40% of the Ache population is Christian. Though the Ache are maturing in their faith, they continue to hold on to some old beliefs. An experienced linguistic consultant from SIL will check the translation for clarity, accuracy and consistency. The team hopes to finish the translation of the New Testament and the major books of the Old Testament by 2015.

  • Since the Ache project began several years ago, the team has made terrific progress. To date, they’ve drafted the four Gospels and Acts, which account for 60 percent of the New Testament Thank the Lord for the Ache team’s good translation progress. Pray that their momentum will continue and that they’ll maintain unity and high quality work.

  • Thank the Lord for The Wycliffe Associates Team building the Ache translation center.

  • Project director Victor, a translator who speaks another language, attended a weeklong workshop in Dallas to learn more about the process of consulting for a Bible translation project. Pray for Victor as he works cross culturally with the Ache team. Pray for clarity, tenacity and understanding as they labor together. Pray that the Lord will give Victor wisdom and grace as he orchestrates the team’s work.
