Languages of Abakaliki, Nigeria

The Abakaliki are living in a state called the “Salt of the Nation.” There are 3 languages in this cluster: Izii, Ikwo and Ezaa. Swiss Wycliffe members Paul and Inge Meier began work among the Izii people in 1964. Christians from the Ezaa and Ikwo languages requested translation help in the early 1970s. This team of Nigerian translators, local churches and translation consultants is working together to bring God’s Word to all three languages.

  • The Ikwo, Ezaa and Izii have been making good progress toward completing their goals. Praise God these Abakaliki teams have been bringing a number of Old Testament books up to a higher degree of excellence. Pray that the Lord will empower the translators to edit the remaining books.

  • For two and a half months the teams weren’t able to work in the office, as there wasn’t energy to support their computers. Thankfully, a new generator has been supplied, and the teams are now enjoying steady use of it. Pray that God will meet the logistical and technical needs of the project and not let the work be hindered by equipment or power issues.

  • Each team member feels satisfied that God brought him into this Bible translation ministry. Thank the Lord for their great attitude and praise Him for protecting them, especially in the area of health and safety on the roads.
