Suba 1

Most of the Suba live on the islands and shores of Lake Victoria in Southwest Kenya. Their main trade is fishing and building mahogany boats that are in great demand in surrounding communities. Many still practice the traditional religions involving ancestral spirit worship.

In 1992 Kenya’s Bible Translation and Literacy organization initiated the Suba translation project and appointed Naphtaly Mattah as the main translator and project leader. The team made significant progress including the translation of Jonah.

In 1996 Seed Company partners joined the project, providing significant financial support and translation help. This new partnership has resulted in translation of the majority of the New Testament and a variety of other literature.

The people are ripe and ready to receive God’s Word. Newer churches with Suba pastors are experiencing much growth as they conduct their worship in Suba. More and more Suba people are becoming Christians and taking hold of the task of pastoring and teaching in their own language.
