The Southern Mexico Cluster Project is a translation working group directed by two experienced indigenous translators. These two leaders serve as consultants to five related language teams. Indigenous workers from each language group are producing five distinct translations. These two project consultants help the teams by leading workshops and giving one-on-one consulting. And an exegetical consultant will also be checking the translations.
By having an experienced indigenous translator serve as a consultant for language associates working in these five projects, the indigenous translators should be able to do good work with limited involvement from outside personnel. The leaders are able to multiply their efforts with several language projects. The indigenous translators are able to benefit from each other’s ideas and experience while receiving guidance and direction from the experienced translator from a related language and culture. The five language groups are: the Santo Domingo, the San Pablo, the San Vicente, the Santa María and San Miguel peoples. (These are pseudonyms.)
The five language groups range from 1,500 to 9,500 speakers each. The people of the groups are traditionally farmers with some engaged in skilled crafts.
