Melichi NT

The Melichi people inhabit a mountainous region of Southeast Asia. The population is scattered among a variety of large and small villages. People in this region support their families by working primarily as subsistence farmers, growing staple crops of rice, corn and millet. They also raise coffee, oranges, mangoes and limes as cash crops. Since the Melichi support their families through farming, most people do not have the financial resources or time to focus on school or on Bible translation.
Although they were originally animist, the Melichi are reported to be approximately 75% Christian. Missionaries traveled from northern parts of the country to spread the gospel within the last 100 years. Anglicans, Baptists and other smaller Protestant denominations are currently active.
All of the local denominations have agreed to cooperate on a translation project and have selected individuals to make up a translation committee. Two native speakers, Rev. Khoso and Rev. SuRe, have completed initial translation training, developed an alphabet, and have started translating. An experienced linguist/translator, who has already completed a translation in a related language, is available to help as a project advisor.
