Project Profile

Manta NT

Most Manta support their families by subsistence farming, plowing the fields with oxen, cows, water buffaloes or by hand. They practice a traditional animistic religion, attributing power to the spirits of ancestors, trees and other objects that they believe control their lives.

Less than 1 percent of the Manta people have accepted Christ, and the rest are very reluctant to become Christians. Other than Bible translation, there is no concerted effort being made by Christians to reach this group.

God has called Ral Jaran (who has an M.A. in linguistics) and Numa, his wife, to serve as the translators. The husband-wife team come from a different Indian language and culture. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide the New Testament and portions of the Old Testament for Manta-speaking people in their heart language. Literacy activities will train a core group of people to read and to use these translated materials effectively. The Manta people will be able to read God’s Word in their own language for the first time.
