Project Profile

Las Flores NT | Las Flores

Las Flores 1

The 5000 speakers of the Las Flores language (a pseudonym) grow corn and beans for subsistence. As a cash crop, some grow coffee or oranges, but traditionally more have raised sugar cane. It has become more and more difficult for the local economy to support the growing younger generations and many have sought temporary work in other cities, including Mexico City.

A sense of pride pervades the Las Flores community. The people value their language and have a healthy sense of self-esteem. There has been a variety of Christian influences in the area since the 1930s. And recently one group of believers told their priest “We need the Bible in our own language.”

Las Flores 2

This project is being headed by Gulmaro, a 30-year-old Christian man who is fluent in his own language and Spanish. It was during his time in the army in Mexico City that he was presented with the Gospel and decided to commit his life to Christ. He is now working full time on the project. The translated book of Jonah was the first book ever printed in their language. Believers and unbelievers alike are amazed to see their language written.

Her mom, a frail but determined woman, has helped distribute the book and cassette tape of Jonah, taking them around to her friends to hear. This book and a summary of Genesis 1-11 have been well received among the believers.
