Gamai 1

The Gamai people live in central Nigeria. Missionaries first brought the Gospel to them in 1918. Today as many as 70 percent of the Gamai people consider themselves Christians, though the belief of many remains nominal.

Traditional religion is still widely practiced in rural villages. The women, rather than the men, lead Gamai religious affairs. In their belief system, special women relate to the one main goddess on behalf of all the people.

The primary ruler, a Christian, has been very supportive of Bible translation and local believers have formed and provide leadership for a language committee. Pastor Timothy Ohikere, a believer from another language group in Nigeria who served as the full time project coordinator and main translator, was killed in an automobile accident in December of 2004. The other members of the team are continuing to work while they look for someone to replace Rev. Ohikere as project coordinator.
