Choco IG Cluster

Languages participating in this cluster:

  • Mountain Choco
  • Southern Choco
  • Headwater Choco

The people of the Southern Chocóan language groups primarily live in the Pacific coastal jungles of South America. Rugged terrain and extensive river systems have contributed to the relative isolation of these ethnic groups. Mosquitoes, carrying malaria and dengue fever, thrive in this environment. In this isolated environment, many people are enticed or pressured into elicit drug production.

The Chocó believe evil spirits exercise power in their lives and that the dead often become demonic beings that haunt the living. Shamans serve as intermediaries to the spirits. The Catholic Church has had a very marginal influence in most of the Chocóan language groups. Because of the Bible translation process, there are some believers in each group.

Because the Chocó people live in an oral culture, this project will begin by helping partner groups produce accurate, oral retellings of Scripture. The second phase of work will build on this foundation by providing the community with the translated text of key Scriptures.
