Project Profile

Amiya NT | Amiya

The Amiya people have lived in the Sahara region for generations. Traditionally nomadic herdsmen, many Amiyas have now settled in agricultural communities or urban centers. As grazing land becomes harder to find, many formerly nomadic Amiya are making the transition to a more sedentary lifestyle. Many Amiya people are now working in professions such as fishing, mining and government.

Amiya society was largely converted to a major religion of the area by the eleventh century. In reality, the Amiya practice a folk version of that religion with animistic undertones. Christian influence is minimal and the Amiya consider Christianity "second best." There are very few known Christians among the Amiya.

The Christian community working among the Amiya desperately needs the Scriptures for evangelism and for discipling the few believers. The Scriptures in Amiya are essential if believers are to remain strong and grow in the face of frequent persecution.
